Things Are Not That Bad Out West

Reviewed by Adam Matthews

Having read alot of the publicity surrounding this film, there was no doubt that I wasn't expecting much when I viewed this movie.  But to my surprise Wild Wild West didn't turn out to be the stinker that the press would have you believe.  Sure there are some rough spots and some corny jokes, but this film never pretends to be anything but what it is, good harmless fun.

When the top scientists of the good ol' U.S of A are kidnapped, the president enlist two of his finest men, James West (Will Smith) and Artemus Gordon (Kevin Kline), to find out what is going on.  What they uncover is a plot by the legless (I don't mean drunk) super villain Arlis Loveless to sell parts of the United States back to its original owners.

Will Smith and Kevin Kline ham it up in their respective roles to great effect and Kenneth Branagh is surprisingly effective as the villain, Loveless.  Supporting these three is Salma Hayek, and no one can ever complain about having to watch her.

Look, this film is never going to win many awards for film-making but it is the type of film which you can sit down and just enjoy.   You don't have to think about the plot or predict what is going to happen next, all the viewer has to do sit down and watch what turns out to be quite an entertaining film.

Directed by Barry Sonnenfeld, the man behind Men In Black, the film is an old western on steroids.  Complete with supped-up trains and a gigantic hydraulic spider, the west has never been portrayed like this.

Be warned though, if you expect this film to be anything other than a cheesy gag-filled, special effects laden adventure than you will be in for a let down.  The best way see to see this film is with a bucket of popcorn and a coke by your side, and just sit back and enjoy the ride.
