Movie of the Year? Reviewed by Adam Matthews
Easily one of the best movies of last year, The Sixth Sense could have walked away with a bagful of Academy Awards had it not been for a little film called American Beauty. Put quite simply, The Sixth Sense is one of the most gripping films ever made. From it's shocking beginning through to its unbelievable ending, this movie engages all of your emotions and will leave you wanting a second viewing. Malcolm Crowe (Bruce Willis) is an award winning child psychologist who must face up to a past mistake by helping an apparently disturbed young boy (Haley Joel Osment) who claims to see dead people. What he discovers in the end is more shocking than he first thought. The story is very interesting on its own but what sets this film apart is the brilliant acting. Both Haley Joel Osment and Toni Collette (who plays the young boy's mother) rightfully received Oscar nominations for their absolutely astonoshing performances and I get the feeling that, had he not been typecast as a "musclehead" before this role, Bruce Willis may well have been nominated for one of the prestigious little statuettes as well. During the film you will be scared witless one minute and be reaching for the tissues the next. The film is so powerful that after you have viewed it, you will not have anything else on your mind for the next few hours. No doubt it will have you hurrying back for a second viewing so that you may pick up on things that you may have missed on first view. Writer/Director M. Night Shyamalan has produced a movie which is so brilliantly eerie that you can't help but feel the hairs on the back of your neck stand up. Maybe it's the dead people?. Rating: *****
