It's 1957 and the Russians have sparked off the space race by launching the first satellite, Sputnik.  In the mining town of Coalwood, young Homer (Jake Gyllenhaal) becomes fascinated with rockets and yearns for a career at Cape Carnaveral.  But he must fight his father who wants his boy to follow in his footsteps and work down the mines.
