Same old Hugh Grant Reviewed by Adam Matthews
There is never any danger that Hugh Grant will play, or at least have success by playing, anything but the bumbling Englishman. But he doesn't need to when he plays the role so well. Mickey Blue Eyes is yet another movie in which Grant can work his British persona to the fullest. He plays Michael, an auctioneer at a up and coming auction house who asks his American girlfriend Gina (jeanne Tripplehorn) to marry him. What he doesn't know is that Gina's father (James Caan) is a member of the mob and by marrying her, he will become one of the "family". Both James Caan and Jeanne Tripplehorn turn in solid performances along with a supporting cast which is full of mafia stereotypes. But the best of them all is James Fox as Michael's English boss at the auction house who, everytime he is on screen, provides more than his fair share of laughs. Maybe the only negative (and I was stretching to think of one) is that the movie may run 10-15 minutes longer than it should. Some scenes, you feel, could could have been left of the cutting room floor, which would have made the movie a little "tighter". The movie provides several hilarious moments (the scene in the Chinese resturant is the best of them), and never strays from it's comedic course. It would have been very easy for the makers of this film to try and turn it into a "darker" kind of movie but by keeping the comedy "light", they have produced a film which is immensely watchable.
