Gadget's A Bit Rusty

Reviewed by Adam Matthews

If Hollywood remains intent on re-making old television shows into feature films then they better do it a lot better then this half-baked effort.  The story-line is almost non-existent and what we get is a muddled mess.  As with a lot of special effects movies, the effects are spectacular, but someone forgot to throw in a script.

For some reason the good people at Disney (who usually make fine films) decided to stray as far as possible from the original, much-loved television series.  It seems they aimed for a "cartoon" type feel to the movie but in doing so they over-did it and the result would struggle to keep it's target audience (presumably anyone under the age of five) entertained.

Inspector Gadget is probably the closet character to resembling his TV original.  He is still a bumbling fool who couldn't solve a crime to save himself.  Matthew Broderick is as likable as ever in the title role, it is just a shame that the material he had to work with was sub-par.

Rupert Everitt is solid as the villain, Claw (who's face was never shown in the TV series, but of course that would have been impossible to replicate in the film, given the casting of a big name star like Everitt) but at times even he seems to over play the part.  It may have made for a better movie had the makers cast an unknown actor in the part so that, like in the TV series, Claw's face was not revealed.  This would have added his evil "presence".

Where were Penny and Brain the Dog for most of the movie?  In the TV series they were the ones who helped out Gadget but are hardly ever seen in the film.  When Penny does appear she comes across more as a typical teenage brat then a intelligent girl capable of solving any crime.

Granted, the film is aimed at a young audience, who are usually more impressed with how a film looks rather then how good the story-line is, but Disney may well have been advised to make Inspector Gadget a little more appealing to an older audience. After all, the fans of the original TV series are a little bit older now and are not impressed by special effects.

Disney has shown before that they can make films that entertain both children and adults, so maybe that is the angle that they should have taken with Inspector Gadget.  Instead what they did was aim too much towards a young audience and alienated any fans of the original TV series.

Hopefully there will be a sequel made and lets hope that the makers produce a film with a little more in common with the TV series.   If not, at least throw in a decent script.
