Don't Vote In This Election

Reviewed by  Adam Matthews

Rushmore was one of the best films of last year and, upon watching Election, one gets the feeling that writer/director Alexander Payne was aiming for the same kind mood for this sometimes amusing, but mostly muddled film about a school election.

The main problem is that Payne establishes too many storylines and he never manages to bring them all together to form a meaningful conclusion.  Maybe the best thing to have done would have been to eliminate a couple of storylines - or even characters - so that the main characters could have been developed more.  That way, I may have actually cared about what happened to the characters.

But enough of the negatives, here are a few positives.  Chris Klein is fantastic as Paul Metzler, the injured jock that teacher Mr McAllister (Matthew Broderick) coerces into running in the election.  He plays the somewhat dim-wited Metzler to perfection and provides almost all of the films funny moments.

Also good is the impressive Reese Witherspoon as the overachieving Tracy Flick.  Had this movie focused more on her character, it would have been far more enjoyable.  You sense that there is so much more to Tracy than we are allowed to see and it could have been good for the film if her character was allowed to develop.

This film could have been so much better had it not been so complex. A couple of less storylines, the ommision of a couple of characters and maybe this film would have reached the heights of Rushmore. Or then again maybe not.
