The Best is Yet to Come

Reviewed by Adam Matthews

George Lucas finally brings to us the first of three prequels to his phenomenally successful films Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.  Any movie with the Star Wars name attached to it is going to be good,  you can bank on that.

There is probably no point in me outlining the plot of this movie because anyone who was going to see it already has, probably more than once.   But just to be sure, here it is (my apologies to any Star Wars nut who thinks that my outline is wrong).

When the peaceful planet of Naboo is threatened with invasion by the corrupt members of the federation,  Queen Amidala (Natalie Portman) enlists apprentice Jedi Knight , Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor) and his master, Qui-Goon Jinn (Liam Neeson), to help restore order.   Along the way they encounter a gifted child, Anakin Skywalker (Jake Lloyd), whom Qui-Gon believes is a future Jedi Knight.

Phantom Menace has its fair share of highlights. The story is interesting enough but at times the film is too slow and does struggle to keep the viewer engrossed in what is happening on the screen.  Having said that however, being a Star Wars movie, there is enough action and interesting characters to make this a worthwhile viewing experience.

Villain, Darth Maul has become a cult figure amongst Star Wars enthusiasts and it is a shame that he does not receive more screen time.

All of the principle actors turn in good performances and contrary to popular thought, Jar Jar Binks (a completely computer animated character) does provide several lighter moments.

If Phantom Menace was viewed as a stand alone film then maybe the viewer could be disappointed. But when you figure in the fact that the film is "laying the ground work" for the following two prequels, then Phantom Menace becomes all the more enjoyable because you just know that the best is yet to come.
