PREVIEW THOUGHTS: Two people from opposite families, or gangs in this case, fall in love and have to bring the two warring gangs together. Sound familiar? That's because Romeo Must Die is loosely based on Shakepeare's classic Romeo & Juliet. But don't be fooled, just because it is based on one of the greatest love stories ever written doesn't mean that this is a movie for the couples. There is not one man in tights and no one is speaking any old English. This "love story" appears to be more about seeing how many heads our hero can kick in rather than how he can win the fair maidens hand. Star Jet Li is probably best remembered by mainstream cinema goers as the bad guy in Lethal Weapon 4 and there is obviously no doubting his martial arts skills. If you were to watch the trailer for this movie, it is hard to see how it is anything but a straight down the line action film. Maybe it is, I haven't seen it as yet. But I just hope this movie has more going for it than Li's kicking ability because all this has all been done before and these types of movies have never done much to excite my senses. There will be an audience for this film, teenage boys will no doubt lap it up, and anyone who goes to see it will probably not be disappointed. So if you get off on watching Jet Li, or others like him, flying totally unrealistically through the air whilst simoulstaniously knocking out most of his foes, then enjoy this movie. Just don't expect to see me sitting next to you. |
