PREVIEW THOUGHTS: Finally we can see whether the movie lives up to the hype. This is one of the "blockbuster" movies of the year and hopefully M:I-2 can deliver. Filmed in Sydney (as I'm sure everyone already knows given the press the film received whilst shooting), Tom Cruise reprises his role of secret agent Ethan Hunt, who this time must stop the release of a potentially world-ending virus. Cruise was excellent in the original film and no doubt will give another solid performance in this sequel. Director John Woo (Broken Arrow, Face/Off, Hard Target) comes along for the ride this time and his presence has me a little worried. There is little doubting that Woo is a talented director, but his style is a little off-centre and hopefully he can rely on the storyline to carry the movie rather then over-doing his direction, something that he has been guilty of in the past (Broken Arrow in particular). Seeing the preview for this film has only added to my apprehension. It is high on action and shows little of the suspense that made the original movie enjoyable. Then again it is only a preview and hopefully we will not be overdosed on stunts in the full feature. Anthony Hopkins is another new-comer and his presence should prove a bonus (although the American accent he displays in the preview is very annoying). No doubt M:I-2 will rocket to the top of the Box-Office upon its' release (if only because of it's advance publicity) but how long it stays there will depend, as always, on the strength of the film itself. If Woo can refrain from trying to direct the spotlight away from the story and it's actors and on to himself instead, then M:I-2 should prove to be more then just a "publicity hit". And please Mr. Woo, no slow motion shots. They are very irritating. |
