PREVIEW THOUGHTS: Bette Midler has stated that she wished that she had not made any movies. Well Bette, you are probably not the only one. Midler no doubt has some talent but she has never really been able to fully display that talent on the big screen and Isn't She Great seems unlikely to change that. The move is based on the true story of author Jacqueline Susanne, a struggling author who is suddenly shoved into the limelight when her new book becomes a best seller. Supporting Midler is the immensely talented Nathan Lane but, like Bette, Lane seems incapable of repeating his stage success on the big screen. You get the feeling that Midler and Lane will spend the whole film competing for the audiences attention rather than letting the story carry the film. Although it must be said that the story is a little light weight and would be more at home in one of America's daytime soaps. If you are a fan of either Bette Midler or Nathan Lane (come on, there must be some of you out there somewhere), then by all means see this movie, but anyone else might be well advised to steer well clear of this film, which has "flop" written all over it. . |
