Fight Club Doesn't Drop the Soap

Reviewed by Adam Matthews

Fight Club is a strange movie.

For most of it there seems little point to the story, two guys bored with there lives start up an underground boxing club in an attempt to "feel alive", and the way in which the film is shot, by director David Finch, will alienate a few viewers.

It is uncompromising and if the movie was solely about a boxing club then this film would have gone in the "must miss" pile.  But Fight Club has nothing to do with the actual club and instead is the story of one man's descent into the madness brought on by dreariness of everyday life.  A story that many people out there can relate to.

Anyone familiar with Finch's work will know what style to expect.   Certainly not mainstream, Finch has a knack for making the unusual and sometimes seedy, immensely enjoyable to watch.  It is never easy to watch, but it is totally engrossing and anyone who finds themselves bored with the story one minute, will be totally enthralled the next.

There is a twist in this movie that is the equal to the much hyped twist in last year's mega-hit The Sixth Sense.  Up until this twist happens, the movie seems to be heading nowhere but after it, all makes sense and the film is lifted from mediocre to exceptional.  Anyone tempted to switch of the movie three quarters of the way through would be well advised to resist the urge.

Edward Norton takes the acting honours in a points decision from a buffed-up, Brad Pitt and the always impressive, Helena Bonham-Carter.  All three turn in performances that rank with the best in their careers and one senses that it was only the films slightly objectionable premise, that saw the three not talked about when it came to Oscar nominations.

There is no doubt that Fight Club will not hit the mark with everyone.   As mentioned earlier, it is a strange film.  But if people dismissed movies on the fact that they are slightly weird then they would be missing out on some of the best films ever made.

Fight Club is not one of the best films ever made, but in an age when too many films follow a familiar, often boring formula, it takes a film like this to remind the audience that there is more then one way to see the world. It may not be pleasant or great fun to watch, but it will leave you thinking and sometimes that is the best thing a movie can do.
